One professional female sports organization, the Woman's National Basketball Association(WNBA) has survived for fifteen years, and is still thriving, even though critics doubted the league would last five years. The WNBA is a fast evolving basketball league with highly talented female athletes with dazzling skills and abilities. Many skeptics who has attended a live game has left convinced that the woman's game is as real, entertaining and dynamic as the man's game (NBA).
Great Forerunners
In the fifteen years that the league has existed, fans have witnessed some of the most celebrated female basketball players who has ever played the game. Female athletes such as Lisa Lesley, Cynthia Cooper, Swirl Swoops, Teresa Weatherspoon, Tina Thompson, Jennifer Gillom laid the foundation for the league fifteen years ago. Not only were these woman great athletes and forerunners of the game, they were all positive role models for the current group of dynamic woman players today. Often these woman were out in the community inspiring young girls and boys how to be successful in life. Connecting with their community has only added to their greatness.
Neglected Role Models
The current players such as Candace Parker, Sylvia Fowles, Seimone Augustus, Candice Wiggins, Diana Taurasi, Cappie Pondexter, and Myra Moore are carrying on the tradition of their role models. These ladies show great leadership in their communities. How can the majority of the America public neglect such positive and influential league? Perhaps the Cinderella mentality that men and woman has grown up to believe has kept the American public less interest in the woman's game. The Cinderella mentality view woman as weak, dependent and and good only enough to bare children. Historically, sports in America has always been a man's thing. Woman were viewed are soft and non-competitive, even by those women who profess to be members of the women’s movement. However, this is the mentality that must change if America is going to honor the woman's game.
Competition & Skills
WNBA competition among the 12 teams is unrivaled by any other professional sports league. For those who love fundamental basketball played at the highest level, the WNBA is the league to watch. Attend a game or watch it online or on national TV. However, view the game with an open mind. Expect to see the same dynamic skills and talents displayed by these talented women, including the fast break, hot shooting, basket attacking, defense splitting, incredible blocks and steals, clutch shooters and at times, DUNKS.
Up & Coming Dunkers
Although dunking isn't something you will see all the time, at least not at the present time. However, since the the women professional basketball gaming is evolving so fast, consistent dunking isn't far off. With the games of highly talented players such as Candace Parker and Sylvia Folwes steadily evolving and the promising prospects such as Brittany Grinner entering in the league, dunking will soon become as prevalent as that of the man's game. Young woman athletes are coming out of college more athletically gifted than ever before seen in history. If a skeptic fan watch a few WNBA game without bias or prejudice, he or she will definitely not be disappointed.

The importance of the WNBA can not be overstated, especially when it comes to the future of young woman who dream of becoming a WNBA player. These woman demonstrate positivity and hope to their young fans. They are the heroes that bring inspiration to the next generation of woman athlete who has defied the forces of traditional thinking. Many parents who have taken their daughters and sons to see a WNBA game, have seen the inspiration in their children faces.
